AI is moving from a buzzword to a genuine competitive advantage. But for most businesses, the question isn't "should we use AI?" — it's "how do we add AI without breaking what already works?"
Here's how we approach AI integration at VerumAstra.
Start with a Problem, Not a Technology
The biggest mistake companies make is starting with "we want to add AI" rather than "we have this specific problem." AI tools are most valuable when solving well-defined problems:
- Document processing — extracting structured data from unstructured inputs
- Customer support — handling tier-1 queries automatically
- Recommendation engines — personalizing content or products

Define the problem first. Then choose the tool.
Assess Your Data Situation
AI quality scales with data quality. Before integrating any AI, audit what you have:

- Quality: Is your data clean, complete, and correctly labeled?
- Privacy: Does your data contain PII that limits which AI services you can use?
For most integrations, you won't need to train a model from scratch. Modern LLMs and APIs can be configured with just prompts and a small number of examples.
Choose Your Integration Pattern
There are three main patterns for integrating AI:
1. API-First (Easiest)
Use a hosted AI service (OpenAI, Claude, Gemini) via API. Your application sends requests and receives responses. No infrastructure to manage. Best for: text generation, classification, summarization.
2. Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG)
Combine a vector database with an LLM. Index your company's knowledge base, then retrieve relevant context before generating responses. Best for: AI that needs to know your specific data (support bots, internal tools).
3. Fine-Tuning
Adapt a base model on your own labeled data. Higher accuracy for specific tasks, but requires more data and infrastructure. Best for: specialized classification, domain-specific generation.
Build Observability In From Day One
AI outputs are non-deterministic. Unlike traditional code, the same input can produce different outputs. This makes observability critical:
- Log all inputs and outputs
- Track user feedback (thumbs up/down, corrections)
- Monitor for drift in output quality over time
- Set up alerts for unusual response patterns
Graceful Degradation
Your product must work even when the AI component fails. Design every AI feature with a fallback:
- If AI classification fails → fall back to manual review queue
- If AI summarization times out → show the original text
- If recommendation engine returns empty → show popular items
Users will trust AI features more if they know the product still works when AI isn't perfect.
Iterate Fast
AI integration is inherently iterative. Ship early, gather real usage data, and improve. A working v1 with 80% accuracy, shipped in 6 weeks, beats a perfect v1 that takes 6 months.
